The first assignment was to write a mystery, and I wrote a murder mystery. I couldn’t wait for everyone to hear my awesome story. In the class, the teacher had everyone take turns reading in a circle. When I finally got my turn to read, the other students seemed to really enjoy my story. I was feeling good about their reactions until the teacher starting complaining that my story was a little too “dark.” She also said I needed some more foreshadowing, and she seemed to really dislike my story. She said, “why did you have to write about such a depressing subject?” I was thinking, “I don’t know how to make a murder mystery filled with shiny happy people.” She seemed completely pleased with all the other stories, which seemed to me as if they were written by first graders.
